commentary on copyright piracy
by Martin Lisius

I have no sympathy for pirates.

I am an artist.  I like being around creative people.  They are not prolific at pirating, murder or destruction.  Creative people create, they don't destroy.  And, they have no reason to pirate intellectual property since they can simply create what they need.   Pirates feed on creative people.  They sit back and let them create, and then they take what they please.

Creative people are generally not mean and nasty.  But I am.  I'm mean and nasty when I see pirates plundering my work, or the work of colleagues.  And, I've adopted a "zero tolerance" policy toward copyright infringement.

Pirates use copyrighted material without permission, and show little respect for the owner's copyrights. They tend to be a belligerent lot and dislike being held accountable.

Pirates are not smart.  They may think they are, but they are most proficient at stealing, stalling, and slithering away.  They make little contribution to the world and basically just stink up the place.

Copyright law is supposed to protect creative works.  But,  copyright law is not strong enough.  It should provide harsher penalties for pirates of unregistered works, for example.  And, all references to "fair use" should be eliminated from copyright law.  Copyright owners can help strengthen laws by registering their works on a timely basis and by adopting a "zero tolerance" policy toward infringements.

There was a day when pirates were hanged.  I think a little more rope would stretch a long way toward deterrence.
